Chin augmentation : Presentation

Chin augmentation, also known as genioplasty or mentoplasty, helps to restore harmony to the face by reinforcing the relief of the chin when it is considered insufficiently developed in profile. A chin with age and a tendency to sag. Re-pulping” or “unfolding” helps to restore radiance and improve the oval of the face.

In addition to the surgical solutions represented by the classic chin prosthesis or lipostructure (chin augmentation by fat injection), there is today a gentle method, medical genioplasty by injection of hyaluronic acid. In most cases this is sufficient, with all the advantages that a simple injection of hyaluronic acid has over surgery.

Before the operation
for chin augmentation

A consultation with Dr. Diacakis, a plastic surgeon in Paris, is necessary prior to a chin augmentation operation. The therapeutic alternatives will be explained to you, in particular genioplasty by lipostructure (fat injection), genioplasty by chin implant or by injection of hyaluronic acid.
A clinical examination will allow us to assess your chin and evaluate the desired correction. The general balance of your profile and facial proportions are also observed.
Any medication containing aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs is prohibited. A homeopathic treatment with arnica is started on the same day to minimise the risk of bruises (ecchymosis) in case of surgery.

Procedure for
chin augmentation surgery

Doctor Diacakis, a plastic surgeon in Paris, adopts a technique that he adapts to each case to obtain the best results. The duration of the procedure is between 30 minutes and 1 hour in case of chin implant or lipostructure and 20 minutes in case of hyaluronic acid injection.

In case of surgery, local or general anaesthesia is required on an outpatient basis.

  • For the genioplasty operation with chin prosthesis the scar is hidden in the mouth.
  • For genioplasty by chin lipofilling there is no scar on the face.
  • If hyaluronic acid is injected, an anaesthetic cream may be used to make the procedure painless. With the help of a cannula, it is then easy to obtain the desired correction, depending on the necessary quantity to be injected.

After a chin
augmentation operation

It is also advisable to avoid massaging the face for 48 hours.
For a few days it will be preferable to avoid aspirin, sun exposure and sauna. In case of surgery, oedema and bruising are to be expected for 2 weeks. A compression bandage is kept on for 4 to 5 days. A 5-day work stoppage period is to be expected.

  • For genioplasty surgery with chin prosthesis

Sometimes an antibioprophilaxy is indicated as well as antiseptic mouthwashes during the first week.
The stitches are absorbable.

  • For genioplasty intervention by lipofilling (fat injection) :

Any manipulation of the face must be avoided. No social eviction is necessary.

  • In the case ofgenioplasty by injection of hyaluronic acid:

immediate return to work is possible.

The result of
a chin augmentation

In the case of medical genioplasty by hyaluronic acid, the progress and current techniques of chin augmentation today allow natural and aesthetic results to be obtained with a duration in time which largely competes with that of fat in the lipostructure of the chin.

In fact, the result gradually diminishes over several years.

For Dr. Diacakis, an aesthetic surgeon in Paris, the choice of hyaluronic acid should in most cases be proposed first because it is the simplest, quickest, inconsequential and cheapest.
A single session is enough to see immediate results. There is no scar. The correction is undetectable and the chin retains its natural consistency.

Chin augmentation or medical genioplasty is a very reliable treatment which in the vast majority of cases gives very good or excellent results.

In the case of a genioplasty operation by chin prosthesis, the result is 50% at 1 month, 80% at 3 months and definitive at 6 months.

In the case of a genioplasty intervention by lipofilling (fat injection), the result is considered definitive at 3 months (Time to take the fat graft).
